Junior Forest School
In 2012 we launched another first. We are the only nurseries to introduce Junior Forest School to toddlers from 2.5 to 3 years.
All our children from 3 months are off site enjoying their local environment everyday; the children are therefore very capable explorers by the time they are two.
Although not developmentally ready for a full session they love the challenges that a forest would offer.
In a copse close to the setting our children tackle the uneven ground and watch out for animal holes. Teachers point out hazards of nettles or fungi and explain what will happen if we touch them.
Heidi giggles when she learns that her ‘chocolate peas’ are in fact rabbit poo.
The following week we return in snow, there are open mouths of amazement when we find an abundance of rabbit, dear and fox foot prints. Jack is so excited that the woods have come alive ‘it’s very busy here!’ he squeals.
What parents say.
‘Thank you for inviting me to your Forest School Session. I would never have believed my sons independence and love of the rain had I not seen it for myself. The pram will be left at home in future!’
What Ofsted says.
‘Staff effectively use ongoing observations to plan a wide range of interesting activities that sustain interest. Particularly developing children’s knowledge and understanding of natural features and the world around them.’
